The "Pacific Independence" saved the crew of 4 of the yacht "Mitori" which was damaged by a massive wave on Oct 29, 2010. The "Midori" had left Fiji last week, bound for Auckland. After three days the boat was hit by a wave, believed to have been between six and seven metres, ripping off its rudder, 1000 km southwest of Fiji. The crew alerted New Zealand’s Rescue Co-Ordination Centre which diverted the "Pacific Independence" towards the "Mitori", while the crew tried to fix the rudder. After 30 hours and with the container ship circling, they decided to abandon their yacht. The floor of their life raft had already collapsed and heavy seas made the rescue more difficult. All four men were safely back in their hometown Auckland by Nov 4, and the "Pacific Independence" proceeding to Tauranga, ETA Nov 5, 9 p.m. The "Mitori" was last seen drifting toward New Caledonia and a decision on whether the boat will be salvaged hasn’t been made.
