Leaking barge run aground on the Rhine

On Feb 24, 2020, around 10 a.m. the ‘Rea‘, 1709 ts (EU-No.: 02302647), suffered water ingress at Rees-Haffen near river km 833 on the Rhine while transiting the river upstream enroute from Rotterdam to Neuss. The ship which was loaded with 850 tons cooking oil, was grounded by its master between Xanten-Obermörmter and Rees-Haffen at the right side river shore to avoid its sinking. The fie brigades and police forces from Wesel and Emmerich attended with boats and secured the barge. A second tank barge was called to lighter the cargo. No spills were reported. In the evening hours the 'Rea' could be refloated and was towed to Uerdingen where it was berthed at 11.45 p.m. for surveys and repairs. Passing ship traffic was not affected.
