THE EU anti-piracy force confirmed that the North Korean-flagged ship "Rim" has sunk off the Horn of Africa. The ship was being monitored while adrift south of Ras Hafun after tow lines parted in bad weather. It was last seen on 6 June. Four days later, the naval force concluded that it had sunk.

After its recapture on June 2, during which all six pirates were killed or went overboard. the crew started the engines and steamed away, pursued by more pirates in another hijacked vessel. But after the old engines stalled, an EU Naval Force helicopter swooped down just before the pirates closed in, hovering between the two ships and buying precious minutes. After the crew was taken off the “Rim”, the EU Naval Force let the ship drift in the Gulf of Aden. The ship was to have been scrapped after delivering in India a load of kaolin, a soft white clay used in making porcelain and many other products.
