4 bodies from capsized 'Rio Turbio' found

Tue May 15 08:51:09 CEST 2012 arnekiel

Rescuers found four bodies on Sunday, including that of the captain of an Argentine cargo ship, one day after it collided with a Paraguayan tug boat and sank, with more feared dead. Divers and coast guard personnel backed by a helicopter worked on the operation but were not optimistic about finding survivors among the three people still missing. “We found the body of the ship's captain. He was found in a hallway of the vessel, which was submerged in six meters of water,” said Sergio Gaetan, the local official who is heading the search and rescue operation. The collision Saturday at 4.00am (07.00 GMT) near the northeastern city of Zarate in Argentina came at the 102-kilometre mark of the Parana River, which connects Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. - Sapa-AFP http://www.iol.co.za/news/world/4-bodies-from-capsized-ship-found-1.1296273

Slim chances to find survivors of collision

Mon May 14 10:52:34 CEST 2012 Timsen

The search for the seven crewmmembers of the "Rio Turbio" still missing after the ship capsized on the Parana River near the northeastern city of Zarate continued overnight. Divers had rescued only one crew member from the vessel on May 12 with slight injuries. However, the time factor and the conditions of the collision jeopardised chances that the missing had survived. 16 divers were searching for the missing, but that all of the ship's compartments were flooded. The search also involved nine coast guard ships and a helicopter. Police meanwhile have arrested three of the 12 crew members of the tug "Ava Payagua" which was subject to judicial inspection.
