Leak located and patched

Tue Feb 19 09:28:41 CET 2019 Timsen

Coast Guard responders have located and addressed the cause of flooding on the "Sili" in Pago Pago on Feb 17. A salvage dive team located a two-inch diameter hole on the port side of the engine room and applied a temporary patch. The vessel was no longer taking on water. Any pollution from the incident has been recovered or dissipated. Containment booms remained in place, and a watchstander stayed aboard the vessel to monitor the situation. A long term plan for the ship was in development. At 1:30 p.m. on Feb 16 Sector Honolulu watchstanders received a report the vessel taking on water at the main pier in Pago Pago. Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment American Samoa personnel responded alongside local authorities and members of SOLAR, an oil spill response organization. They deployed containment and sorbent booms around the vessel. Local salvage divers were then able to determine the cause of the flooding and patch the hole. The vessel will remain out of service until it has been dry docked and permanent repairs effected. Dry dock availability was scheduled for the end of March. MSD American Samoa personnel will continue to monitor and advise.

Passenger ferry started flooding

Mon Feb 18 12:13:18 CET 2019 Timsen

Coast Guard crews from Honolulu are responding to the "Sili" taking on water in American Samoa in the afternoon of Feb 16, 2019. The passenger ferry was moored at the main pier in Pago Pago when it began taking on water. No passengers were on board at the time. The Coastguard was working with local authorities to address the situation. No one was aboard the vessel and containment boom has been deployed to address any sheen as work continues to stabilize the vessel and remedy the situation. Accord to the Coast Guard, the maximum pollution potential was roughly 9,000 gallons of diesel fuel and 2,000 gallons of lube oil on board. However, no major spills have been reported. An investigation into the flooding on board is ongoing.

Ferry damaged in bottom touch

Wed Mar 16 12:39:38 CET 2016 Timsen

The "Sili" suffered damage during its last trip to American Samoa's Manu'a on Mar 12, 2016. It was docked at Faleasao Harbor, strong wave action lifted it and slammed it down hard on the ocean floor. Divers carried out an underwater survey of the boat on Mar 12, however, the extent of the damage could not be determined. This left the Manu'a islands without a shipping service while the vessel went onto the slipway to be checked and fixed. A private boat, the SV "Adventurer", planned to make two trips a week to Manu'a while the "Sili" was on the slipway.
