Cruise ship rescued single hand sailor

Mon Jun 01 10:53:33 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'Silver Whisper' executed a seven-hour rescue of an injured sailor from the dismasted yacht 'April Alice' in the Pacific Ocean on May 26, 2026, amid rough seas. The U.S. Coast Guard coordinated the rescue of the 74-year-old Canadian citizen 489 miles off the coast of Tillamook, Oregon. On MAy 25, U.S. Coast Guard Northwest District watchstanders had received a distress relay from the JRCC in Victoria, after the skipper of the yacht had sustained a shoulder injury when it was de-masted. Te engine was rendered inoperable while navigating in gale-force winds and 30-foot seas enroute from Hawaii to British Columbia. After establishing contact with the man through his handheld satellite communicator, Northwest District watchstanders launched an SAR operation. The satellite device allowed the Coast Guard to monitor the yacht’s position while maintaining contact. Because the 'April Alice' was located nearly 500 miles offshore, the Coast Guard deployed a long-range C-27J Spartan fixed-wing aircraft from Sacramento, California, to reach the scene and provide aerial overwatch. While the C-27J was being launched, the AMVER system was also activated. The 'Silver Whisper' responded to the Coast Guard’s request and diverted from their intended course to rescue the injured mariner. A second C-27J aircrew from Sacramento launched to provide overhead communication and supervision. The cruise ship, carrying 392 passengers and a crew of 295, was en route from Papeete to Vancouver. After sailing 120 miles within seven hours, Captain Michele Macarone Palmieri maneuvered his vessel alongside the disabled sailboat twice, as the first securing line broke during the initial approach. The skipper of the yacht was safely brought aboard the 'Silver Whisper' within one hour of the ship's arrival. The ship's crew maintained focus and discipline despite the pitching deck and unpredictable wave action. Safety protocols required all passengers to remain in their cabins during the operation. The injured sailor received immediate medical attention for his injury. The yacht was abandoned at sea, as the cruise ship resumed its course with an ETA as of May 28. Newborn baby found dead, mother faces murder charges

Wed May 22 12:48:54 CEST 2024 Timsen

A female Filipino crew member of the 'Silver Whisper' has been arrested by the Grosseto prosecutor's office on charges of murder after allegedly letting her newborn die on the cruise ship. The woman, who concealed her pregnancy from her colleagues, gave birth ~2 days before the incident. The alarm was raised by her colleagues on the evening of May 19, 2024, while the vessel was near Monte Argentario's coast (Grosseto Province). The police intervened and boarded theship. The newborn's body was discovered in the cabin shared by the mother and other crew members. Authorities conducted a thorough search of the cabin and other areas of the ship, collecting photographic evidence and initial testimonies. In a confused state, the woman was taken to the emergency room in Grosseto. On the morning of May 20, the prosecutor's office decided to arrest her. The baby's body was taken to the "Misericordia" morgue, and an autopsy may be scheduled. Preliminary examinations indicated that the baby's death was not due to suffocation. nstead, it appears the mother left the newborn unattended for hours in the cabin, without providing medical care or nourishment. The 'Silver Whisper's current cruise is a 9-day itinerary from Civitavecchia to Villefranche-sur-Mer/Nice. The voyage started on May 18 and ends on May 27.
