Barge refloated after one week

Tue Oct 18 12:22:27 CEST 2016 Timsen

On Oct 17 the dredger "Biber" lightered half of the cargo of 900 tons fertilizer from the "Sirene" stuck at Rhine kilometer 426,2 off the Raiffeisen warehouse in Mannheim, reducing thus the draught of the ship which refloated at 6 p.m. and was completely unloaded nearby. It left the port of Mannheim on Oct 18 at 6.15 a.m. The barge continued the voyage to Seltz. The "Biber" levelled the river bottom on Oct 18. Barge still stuck at Mannheim

Thu Oct 13 11:47:27 CEST 2016 Timsen

The "Sirene" was still stuck 500 meters upstream of the Kurt-Schumacher-Bridge in Mannheim with 900 tons fertilizer which should only have been carried 10 kilometers Rhien upstream. The reason why the French crew left the fairway was still unclear. Due to the failed salvage attempts sand accumulated at the stern which first had to be removed, before lightering of the cargo might start on Oct 13. Barge stuck in Mannheim

Wed Oct 12 09:02:30 CEST 2016 Timsen

On Oct 11, 2016, the "Sirene" ran aground at the Rhine Quay in Mannheim, river km 426,2, close to the shore during the berthing maneover. The crew which was only French speaking had not understood the navigational warnings regarding shallows which had been issued via VHF since several days. Attempts of another barge to pull the shi off failed. Both helmsmen will be facing an investigation as the salvage attempt was not approved by the authorities. The ship was loaded with about 900 tons fertilizer which will have to be lightered at least partially. Also the shallow may have to be dug off. Passing ship traffic was not affected as the "Sirene" was stuck outside the fairway in an area which was not suitable for shipping. The ship was subject of failed refloating attempts on Oct 12 by the "Worms" (MMSI: 211523610) and "Biber" (MMSI: 211014176).
