Fire in cargo hold with coal

Thu Mar 29 18:13:55 CEST 2018 Timsen

On March 28, 2018, at 10 p.m. a fire broke out in a cargo hold of the "Golden Eclipse" at the Enel Quay in Civitavecchia while offloading a cargo of coal. About 2.500 tons of coal were in each of the seven cargo holds. Four teams of the Rome fire brigade inerevented with support of the NBCR specialized in chemical or biological emergencies who boarded the vessel with thermal cameras and found three hot spots in cargo hold 7. All holds were controlled, but only one found to be overheated. Firefighters identified three outbreaks in hold number 7. Two outbreaks have been extinguished in a short time, while for the third took longer as it was difficult to access. The rapid intervention prevented the flames from spreading to the rest of the ship and the structures on the quay, thus avoiding far more serious environmental consequences. Fire fighting took 12 hours, and the situation was under control in the morning of March 29. The ship ommenced discharge on March 29 and sailed on Apr 3, bound to Gibraltar; ETA Apr 6.
