Crew members dead or injured after fire

Fri Sep 29 10:14:37 CEST 2023 Timsen

The 'Patra Tunda 3153', with 10 crew members on board, suffered a fire in the engine room in the waters of Tanjung Pemancing, Sarang Tiung Village, Pulau Laut Sigam District, South Kalimantan, on Sep 25, 2023. The Head of Police for the Kotabaru Police launched an SAR operation at midnight. The Satpolair together with Basarnas, Lanal Kotabaru, the Kotabaru Police Dokes Team, and the Fire Department proceeded with a C-2 KP 2001 police boat. Two crew members were rescued with burn injuries and were rushed to hospital. Seven more were rescued safe and sound. The captain reported that there was still a crew member trapped on the vessel. The rescue work was hampered because the vessel was still very hot, which endangered the rescue team. Sea conditions are also rough, further complicating the response. After several hours of cooling down the fire, the search for the crew member who was trapped in the engine room, commenced on Sep 26 at 02.40 a.m. The victim was found dead, but could still not be removed. The rescue team appealed to the surviving crew members not to enter the engine room without breathing apparatus, because it was feared that there would still be gas that was dangerous if inhaled. At that time, the team also returned to the Satpolair Office to refill the SCBA oxygen. The disabled tug was difficult to tow.
