Sinking tug intentionally grounded

Fri Sep 12 10:24:22 CEST 2025 Timsen

On Sep 9, 2025, at 5.17 p.m. WITA, the 'PSIP 160.5' ran aground in the waters of Bahodopi, Morowali. The tug had departed from Kendari Port, en route to PT. Bintang Delapan Mineral, Bahodopi, and was maneuvering to approach the barge 'PSIP 300.05', which was anchored in the Labota area. During the maneuver, the tugboat struck a coral formation. The hull was breached at the lower part of its starboard side main engine, suffering significant damage and a massive water ingress. The pumps could not cope with the flooding, and the stern started sinking. The tug 'Enterprise 3', a company-owned vessel nearby, assisted with the evacuation of the 10 crew members. The foundering tug was then towed to the shoreand intentionally grounded at Pulau Alang-Alang to avert total sinking. No casualties were reported, and there was no pollution.
