Fishing vessel towed disabled ship with 483 migrants to Paleochora

On Nov 22, 2022, the 'Tista' towed a disabled 25-m-fishing vessel with about 430 migrants on board to the port of Paleochora at the end of a major SAR operation which started in the morning 18 nautical miles south of Crete, under the coordination of the JRCC of the Greek Coast Guard. Patrol boats, lifeboats, the frigate 'Kanaris', two Italian fishing vessel and five merchant ships were engaged in the response in adverse weather conditions with western winds of 7 Beaufort. The two ships accompanied by a patrol boat and the frigate and safely moored with the assistance of twoGreek-flagged fishing vessels. In the afternoon, the temporary transfer of the 483 migrants, among them 336 men, 10 women, 128 minor boys, and nine minor girls) to the ferry 'Samaris I' was completed at the Tigani port of Paleochora. A preliminary investigation was carried out by the Paleochora Port Station, in cooperation with officers of the Directorate of Security & Protection of Maritime Borders and with the Security-Investigation-Regional Drug Prosecution Team (PODIN) of the Central Port Authority of Chania.
