Engine room fire in Rostock
On May 8, 2026, a fire broke out in the engine room of the "Tom Sawyer", triggering a major operation by the Rostock fire department at berth 53 in the overseas port. Fire crews from the stations 1, 2, and 3 of the professional fire brigade, as well as the volunteer fire departments of Groß Klein, Gehlsdorf, and Rostocker Heide, were alerted at 7.50 a.m. There appeared to have been a technical defect in the exhaust system. An employee opened a hatch, from which an unknown quantity of oil subsequently leaked. A smoldering fire to start. The person was examined by paramedics, but was only slightly injured by the hot oil. Around 50 firefighters were deployed on the ship since 7:50 a.m. The crew was able to extinguish the flames in the initial attack. Then numerous fire departments from across the city arrived and took over the firefighting efforts. The remaining areas were checked to prevent the fire from spreading further. There was a second fn another shaft in the engine room. Meanwhile, further fires were reported on other ship decks. Among other things, a store on deck 3 was said to be ablaze. The response was declared over at 11:26 a.m. The scheduled departure to Trelleborg had initally to be cancelled. The ferry remained stationary in Rostock as of May 11. Medevac off Travemünde
On Sep 14, 2017, a German trucker aboard the "Tom Sawyer" complained about abdominal pain while the ferry, enroute from Travemünde to Trelleborg, was about 18 miles NE of Travemünde. The lifeboat "Berlin" which was already on sea during an exercise with a helicopter, alerted a doctor and returned to Laboe to embark him, while a helicopter which also had participated in the exercise remained on a waiting position on the Kiel Fjord. The doctor was then hoisted aboard and taken to the "Tom Sawyer". He was dropped off half an hour after the alert and started medical treatment of the patient. Both were then hoisted and taken to the university hospital in Travemünde. After the patient was delivered, the helicpoter rendezvoused again with the "Berlin" in the late evening and dropped off the doctor.
