Vessel adrift in gale force winds

Sun Jul 22 09:13:47 CEST 2012 Timsen

The "Triton" was disabled on July 20, 2012, due to cooling problems in the engine off Mehamn and got assistance of the lifeboat "Reidar von Koss" at 8.40 p.m. after it had notified Vardø Radio. The lifeboat sailed from Bisho at 8.50 p.m. and headed for the vessel which was north of Mehamn. There was danger that the "Trition" would drift ashore. On scene ther was a north-easterly gale with a maximum wave height of up to 5 meters. At 9.55 p.m. the crew was able to start the machine again and the ship was kept off the coast. The hurtigruten ship "Vesterålen" was, however, requested to stay close to the casualty, and at 10.05 p.nm. the engine stopped again. At 11.25 p.m. the lifeboat reached the casualty and started to tow it to Båtsfjord 15 minutes later. At 05.15 on July 21 the ship was moored in Bisho. The crew had carried out repairs already while being under tow and started the machine again. After a trial at full speed with the lifeboat on standby at 05.30 a.m. the "Triton" continued the voyage.
