Injured crew member medevaced

Thu Apr 08 11:32:44 CEST 2021 Timsen

On April 6, 2021, at 5.10 p.m. the 'Royalist' asked the HM Coastguard for assistance five miles into Rye Bay after a crew member had suffered a hand/arm injury. The RNLI in Rye Harbour sent ther Atlantic 85 ILB (inshore lifeboat) to the tall ship. Two crew members were dropped off on the vessel. Using their first aid training they were able to give immediate appropriate care. The casualty was already in good hands because the 'Royalist' was staffed by highly competent sailors. Initially, the plan was to transfer the victim to the lifeboat and take him to emergency services on land but it was decided to deploy a SAR helicopter from Lydd. A paramedic from the helicopter was winched down to the 'Royalist', and she continued giving first aid while the helicopter refuelled at Lydd and returned. It was then possible to transfer the man swiftly to hospital in Ashford. The two lifeboat crew rejoined the 'Hello Herbie II' for the journey back to the lifeboat station in Rye Harbour.
