Two ships sank in Kartal

The cargo m/v 'Ümit K.' (MMSI:271002667) broke lose from its moorings and sank at the Kumcular Pier in Kartal, Istanbul, in the severe southwesterly storm which raged on Nov 29, 2021. The 'Umut' also broke lose and drifted onto the sinking 'Ümit K' as well as two jetties. A police team was dispatched to the scene upon the notice of those who saw the distressed ships. Nearby the 'Boras' started to tilt to starboard side and was in the process of sinking too. Laid up ship broke its moorings

The 'Umut', which has been laid up at Kartal repair pier since December 2019 with only a watchman on board, broke its mooring ropes due to adverse weather conditions in the area and drifted away from the pier on April 19, 2021. The vessel could re-berthed in the early morning of April 20 with shore-based assistance.
