Three arrests after drug smuggling attempt

Tue Jul 08 12:14:02 CEST 2025 Timsen

Two employees of the company Barge & Boats Services, along with a third diver, were arrested by the Civil Guard in the port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria while transporting a 60-kilogram shipment of cocaine aboard the "Urquiola Mendi". They were approached by a team of Benemérita officers from a SEMAR patrol boat on July 3, 2025. The Civil Guard boarded the vessel in the waters of the Port, near the Santa Catalina dock. The three people on the barge were taken to court and remanded in custody pending trial. For months, the Civil Guard had been monitoring the suspects' movements, gathering information, and establishing a surveillance system. The detainees have been brought before a court and remanded in custody pending a court hearing. The company itself had raised the alarm about the irregular activities being carried out on one of its vessels for over a year. These individuals, in addition to being arrested, have been immediately dismissed by the company, which has also notified its clients and suppliers of the events, disassociating itself from any illegal activity carried out by these individuals.
