Engine room destroyed by fire
The engine room of the "Proteo" was completely destroyed in a fire on the ship on Aug 19, 2019. Proteo, one of the tankers returned to Venezuela in recent months by Germany's Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, was anchored in the Amuay Bay, near the refinery that bears the same name. The recent US sanctions on the Nicolás Maduro regime have prevented the state oil company from selling oil to refineries in that country. That is why ships returned by the German company are anchored in national ports without being able to operate. No injuries were reported in the fire. The causes of the incident and the extent of the damage were unknown. The ship was inoperative and PDV Marina had hired a team to try to reactivate it, but that had not been possible.
Tanker detained in Curaçao
The "Proteo" was not allowed to depart from Bullenbaai in Curaçao where it had docked on Dec 31, 2017. The cargo of Venezuelan crude oil has been seized by international shipping companies. They demanded 30 million US dollars from the Venezuelan State Oil company PdVSA for outstanding invoices.
