Charred body of missing ship engineer extricated from engine room
The badly-charred body of an engineer, trapped for seven days in the main control room of a ship which caught fire in the waters off Pulau Kukup last Sunday, was extricated last Saturday afternoon (July 20, 2013). A team of firemen removed the body of Indian national G. Srinivasan, 49, from the MT Samudera about 3.30pm. He had sustained 95 per cent burns. Earlier, forensics officers from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) located the body before alerting the relevant authorities. MMEA (Johor Baru chapter) enforcement chief Captain Aminuddin Abd Rashid said the operation to extricate the body took time as the investigators had to wait for the fire to be fully extinguished.
Crewman still missing
The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) were trying their best to stop the fire in the engine room of the "Samudera" from spreading to other parts of the ship. Without warning, a blast had occurred in the ship's engine room on June 14 at 3.30 p.m., and the crew just could not put out the flames. The crewman Giridher, was belived to be still trapped inside the ship. The crew only realised Giridher was missing when they were in the lifeboat. Once the flames were put out, the MMEA was to launch a search for the missing crewman. The vessel was ferrying raw oil from Batam, Indonesia to Chittagong at the time of the fire.
