Ferry delayed and truck drivers arrested

Wed May 14 09:45:46 CEST 2025 Timsen

On the evening of April 30, officers of the Port Authority of Igoumenitsa arrested a 37-year-old Greek national, in violation of articles 169 (Disobedience) and 292 (Obstruction of Transport) of the Criminal Code. The co-driver and owner of a refrigerated truck repeatedly failed to comply with the instructions of the port authorities to leave the 'Alkinoos' together with his vehicle, as he lacked tickets. This resulted in the ship's departure being prevented. Ultimately, the truck was removed from the ship, with the assistance of another professional driver, who drove it to a safe location. The fery finally sailed with 295 passengers 1.40 hours delayed. The truck was initially loaded onto the ship by a 63-year-old local driver, who during the incident felt unwell and was transported to the Emergency Department of Igoumenitsa and then to the General Hospital of Filiates, for further examinations and hospitalization, from where he was released and arrested at noon. A preliminary investigation was being conducted by the Central Port Authority of Igoumenitsa.

Engine failure in Igoumenitsa

Thu Jun 15 11:21:24 CEST 2023 Timsen

The Port Authority of Igoumenitsa was informed in the morning of June 15, 2023, by the Master of the 'Alkinoos' that the ship could not start the starboard side main engine and was therefore unable to perform the scheduled sailing to Corfu with 14 cargo vehicles and 13 passengers on board. The Central Port Authority of Igoumenitsa banned the ferry from sailing until the repair of the damage and the presentation of a certificate of class maintenance by the monitoring classification society. The ship finally left the port at 10.40 a.m. after repairs.

Lost anchor retrieved

Mon Jan 24 10:47:34 CET 2022 Timsen

The Central Port Authority of Corfu was informed in the morning of Jan 23, 2022 by the Captain of the 'Alkinoos', which was operating its scheduled route from the port of Igoumenitsa to Corfu, that during the arrival in port it lost its port side anchor. The ship safely berthed, and with the assistance of a private diver, the anchor was recovered from the bottom and the chain was repaired. During an inspection by a Local Ship Inspection, the anchor was found to be operating satisfactorily, and the sailing ban was lifted.
