Triple allision off Spurn Point

Fri Mar 02 10:24:55 CET 2018 Timsen

The cargo m/v "Celtic Spirit" with a crew of eight on board, bound to Hull in ballast, dragged anchor in position 053 35 56N, long 000 00 57.06E, about 3.6 nautical miles from Spurn Point and, before the engines could be started, allided with the "Atlantic Explorer" with 23 persons on board, bound to Barton-on-Humber, at Hawke Anchorage on March 1, 2018, at 05.30 a.m. Together they continued to drag and came into contact with the cargo m/v "Celtic Warrior", with a crew of nine on board, which was bound to Gunness with a cargo of scrap glass. The "Celtic Spirit" was able to separate itself and dropped anchor. The other two vessels, with tug assistance, were able to disentangle their anchors at 10.56 a.m. and were moored at the Hawke Anchorage. Damage was sustained to all three vessels; the extent of same was presently unknown. Pilotage has been suspended until March 3. The "Celtic Spirit" will eventually proceed to Dunstans Shipyard, Albert Dock, for repairs, while the "Celtic Warrior" will proceed to the designated discharge berth in the River Trent. The "Atlantic Explorer" will proceed to its berth in Grimsby in due course. The Humber Coastguard was coordinating the response.
