Alls afe after ferry fire
In the evening of Jan 11, 2022, the KM 'Bahari Indonesia' caught fire near Belitung Island, Bangka Belitung. All of the crew members as well as the passengers, on the wohle 26 persons, evacuated the ship and were rescued by the KM 'Samudera Jaya Abadi' which happened to pass by the ship’s position. They were taken to Ketapang, West Kalimantan. It is expected that they would reach the destination on Jan 13. The ship was carrying some 18 trucks as well as two minibuses when the incident happened. The fire was assumed to come from a vehicle onboard the ship. The Indonesian authorities had dispatched a search and rescue team, who found the ship 18 nautical miles from its original position. Helicopters were also dispatched for the operation. Authorities reported that the cause of the incident was underway and is being carried out by the joint rescue team. SAR operation for ferry
On July 25 three SAR vessels were deployed to the 'Bahari Indonesia', the 'Wisnu', 'Alugara' and 'Bahari 3'. The fire on the ferry was believed to have originated from one of the vehicles on board. The Basarnas Jakarta resumed the SAR operation for the stricken vessel, which was still anchored in the Java Sea waters, approximately 117 nautical miles from Jakarta.
Gutted ferry to be towed to port
A tug has been sent to assist the 'Bahari Indonesia' and tow the vessel to port. Due to the currents, the gutted vessel has been drifting westwaard during the recent days. A ship from the Indonesia coast guard has been monitoring the vessel and advised passing vessels to be cautious to avoid any accidents. Local authorities were still investigating the cause of the fire.
