Cargo vessel to leave Dublin after two months

Wed Mar 12 13:22:26 CET 2014 Timsen

The "Arslan II" that got into difficulties involving her rudder off Arklow Bank in Jan 2014, and has since remained in Dublin Port, was scheduled to depart to Tuzla on Mar 12. Off Arklow Bank, the vessel was initially assisted by a single tug. When the tow had reached Dublin Bay a Dublin Port Co tug joined in to assist operations of the 260TEU container capacity vessel into port. In February, the Arsalan II was moved into the No.2 dry-dock facility of Dublin Graving Docks Ltd. The incident is currently undergoing an investigation by the (MCIB) Marine Casualty Investigation Board. In recent days the vessel vacated the dry-dock to a nearby berth within Alexandra Basin from where she is to set sail.

Chief Officer fined for grounding ship

Tue Jan 22 18:53:18 CET 2013 Timsen

The Turkish Chief Officer has pleaded guilty to causing grounding at Garroch Point on the southern coast of the Island of Bute. On Jul 2, 2012, the ship was en route from Belfast to Greenock when it grounded at 5 a.m. There was a crew of ten onboard the ship and fortunately there were no injuries and there was no pollution. The ship was refloated at around 09.30 a.m. the same day and proceeded to Greenock where divers found that the ship had suffered serious damage for about one third of its length and the fore peak tank was ruptured. The Chief Officer, Necati Izmir admitted leaving the bridge at about 03.00 a.m. to go to the toilet and has no recollection of events until after the collision when he was found in his cabin by the second officer who had been sent to look for him. The Captain, Bernd Radel from Germany stated that the Chief Officer had been found asleep in his bed. The Sheriff Mrs Anderson fined Mr Izmir a total of £5,000.
