Bridge allision in Lake City

Thu Sep 17 10:45:43 CEST 2015 Timsen

A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet bridge inspector was en route to the US 62/US 641Cumberland River Bridge at the Livingston-Lyon County Line immediately below Barkley Dam at Lake City after the "Howard Corse" pushing nine loaded barges brushed up against a pier on the bridge on Sep 15, 2015. The tug crew reported no damage to any of the barges and only a scrape on the bridge pier. The pilot of the boat reported he was northbound out of the Lock at Barkley Dam when his tow of five loaded sand barges and four loaded rock barges made contact with a pier on the bridge. Due to the minor nature of the incident the Coast Guard did not order the bridge closed to highway traffic. However, the USCG Regional Operations Center at Louisville asked for a certified bridge inspector to run a safety check on the structure.
