Fuel has to be drained ahead of salvage

A floating barrier was placed around the 'Dördüncü' at the port of Kea to prevent a marine pollution. By order of the Ministry of Shipping, the Greek tug 'Pantokrator', manned by a group of divers, engineers and anti-pollution technicians, as well as the necessary equipment, was deployed to the area. Despite the adverse weather conditions, the anti-pollution operation began on the same day. Some quantities of heavy oil have been found inside the vessel's tanks, which must be drained before attempting to lift and remove the wreck. Tanker smuggling 196 migrants grounded in Kea

In the morning of March 16, 2020, the 'Dördüncü', having 193 migrants Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Somalia on board, among them 29 women, two of whom were pregnant, and 38 children, suffered engine trouble enroute from Çanakkale to Italy in wind force 8. The ship diverted towards the port of Kea. After the engine failed, the disabled tanker ended on the breakwater of the port of Kea. All migrants could be rescued. A tug was deplyoed in order to pull the vessel off, but it was already breached and capsized on the jetty, ending up on its port side with the stern under water. The crew of three was arrested for human smuggling. Investigations were being carried out by the Port Authority officials of Kea.
