More that 3,000 pounds of illegally harvested haddock seized
The Massachusetts Environmental Police (MEP) has seized more than 3,000 pounds of illegally harvested haddock from a New Bedford processing plant on June 27, 2024, in the first commercial-scale bust of the groundfish season durng a routine foot patrol inspecting processing plants on the New Bedford waterfront. Undersized fish was discovered in an assembly line ready to be filleted. The processing plant had to temporarily cease operations as the fish was measured, and it was determined that about 3,000 of the 11,000 total pounds of haddock were under the legal limit of 16 inches. The illegal fish was caught by the 'Fisherman', based out of New Bedford and owned by M & P Fishing Corp. Business. The illegal fish was offloaded on the late night of June 26 at the BASE Seafood Auction, after which it was sold to the unnamed processing plant.
