Mexican dead, Filipino injured aboard cargo ship

Wed Aug 10 16:15:44 CEST 2011 arnekiel

An accident aboard a cargo ship on the Atlantic high seas late Tuesday night left one Mexican dead and one Filipino seriously injured, authorities said. The incident occurred aboard the MV Global Leader, a vehicle carrier that is en route to Brazil. Well-placed sources told Demerara Waves Online News ( www.demwaves.com ) that initial information received suggests that a rescue boat might have collapsed on the two sailors. After the incident occurred, the Bahamas-registered vessel anchored near a buoy five miles off Port Georgetown. A Maritime Administration (MARAD) pilot boat rushed to the vessel with medical and other personnel to take off the body of the 46-year old Mexican man and 38-year old Filipino. In keeping with its schedule, the MV Global Leader continued its onward journey so that it could dock at a Brazilian port on August 16 at 15 hours.
