Crew and passengers evacuated after fire
The "Linas Belawan" caught fire on Feb 17, 2016, at 5.30 a.m. in pos. 05 46 S 112 07 E at Perairan Masalembo off the Maselembo islands in the Java Sea. The ship was en route from Jakarta to Makassar, South Sulawesi. The fire had erupted in the engine room from a short circuit in one of the diesel generators and extended to the whole compartment and super structure. The crew started firefighting, but then had to ask the local authorities for assistance which sent one tug and a rescue vessel. All 19 crew members, several of whom suffered injuries, and the 20 passengers, had to abandon ship. The crew got assistance by the rescue ship 'SAR 225' and was evacuated to Tanjung Perak by the 'Pan Margaret' (IMO: 9545297).. After all people on board had been successfully evacuated, an explosion occurred in the generator, causing the vessel to take on water. A Coast Guard tug started firefighting, but the ship sank.rapidly to the bottom of the Java Sea.
