Panic on board after engine failure in storm

Tue Jun 14 09:40:30 CEST 2016 Timsen

The "Bintoharu" with 200 passengers and vehicles on board, encountered rough weather en route from Selayar to South Sulawesi in the Flores Sea on June 13, 2016. One of the engines broke down, one of the propellers was damaged and the ship thus disabled. Reportedly, some passengers panicked. The ferry after struggling on sea for some time finally managed to reach the old port in Bira at the southeast tip of Sulawesi and docked alongside an old pier. The passengers disembarked over the side, using makeshift ladders, ropes and planks, and taken on to Bulukumba. Just before dawn the "Bontoharu" managed to dock in the Port of New Bira and cars and motorcycles have been unloaded from the ship.
