Container ship boarded by eight armed perpetrators
A perpetrator on the forecastle aboard the 'Maersk Nussfjord' pointed an improvised gun at the back of the duty watchman's head, took away his two-way radio and tied him up to the railing of the vessel, which was moored at the South Harbour Anchorage Area, Manila, in position 14 33 21N, 120 56 09E, on July 16, 2021, at 5.25 p.m. Due to heavy rain, the duty watchman had temporarily left his post to collect a rain jacket from the gangway area. Upon return to his post, he encountered the situation. Seven other perpetrators then appeared on board the vessel. They broke the padlock of the boatswain mate's locker and stole a roll of new spare rope mooring line. At 6 p.m. the eight perpetrators departed the vessel using a loose rope from bow and escaped in an unmarked motor banca. The duty watch managed to untie himself from the railings and alerted an able seaman, who then reported the incident to the duty officer. The duty officer sounded the alarm and reported the incident to the Manila Vessel Traffic Management System. A Maritime Patrol was conducted within the area and the Philippine Coast Guard conducted an investigation with the other law enforcement agencies regarding the incident.
