Deadline for wreck removal

After the collision of the 'Maju 8' and the 'Shimpo 16', there have been no signs of oil spills from the wreck of the sunken ship. As a precaution oil pollution equipment was requested from the PT Pertamina. The wreck must be removed as soon as possible. The owner of the 'Maju 8' has onducted a preliminary survey related to the prediction of salvage costs and wreck removal techniques. The company was given a time limit of 30 days to remove both ships by the the Minister of Transportation. If this has not taken place within 90 days the salvage can be carried out by the government at the cost of the ship owner.

Maju 8 sank cargo ship in Lewoleba

The 'Maju 8' got out of control and could not be stopped when entering Lewoleba Port in the Lembata Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, n Dec 10, 2019, at 5.40 p.m. and slammed into the starboard side of the berthed cargo m/v 'Shippo 16' which was unloading a cargo of cement. The 'Shippo 16' was breached by the bulbous bow, suffered water ingress started to list and finally capsized ending bottom up at 6 p.m. It sank with a cement load of 35.000 sacks with an equivalent of 1557 tons of initially 40.000 sacks with an equivalent of 1.700 tons it had loaded in Makassar City. The captain of the 'Maju 8' and the crew from the two ships have been taken to the Lembata District Police Station for interrogations. The 'Maju 8' anchored 70 meters away.
