Grouding at the Loreley

Sun Dec 18 16:25:31 CET 2016 Timsen

On Dec 17, 2016, at 7 a.m. the "Meggy", 1178 ts (EU-No.: 2307190) ran onto the Jungfern Ground on the Rhine cat Oberwesel. The ship was loaded with 750 tons fertilizer and veered off course when the 56-old master got caught at the rudder stick with his sweater. He was unable to correct the course in time. The ship got stuck on a sandbar completely outside the fairway, so that the ship traffic could initially pass with reduced speed. The ship's hull had also remained intact. After an attempt to get off with own power had failed. a tug was ordered, which arrived at 8.45 a.m. One hour later the attempts to refloat the ship were aborted. Because of the draft of 1,93 meters and the low water level, it was not possible to free the ship without lightering part of the cargo. After about 150 tons of the fertilizer were lightened by a dredger, the "Meggy" refloated by noon. The return of the artificial fertilizer took place at St. Goar and could be concluded around 2.15 p.m. The ship then continued its way to Magdeburg.
