Explosion on bunker tanker injured two

On Sep 22, 2016, at 11.20 a.m. an explosion with subsequent fire rocked the "Mercuria" in the port of Taranto. The ship was berthed at the pier San Cataldo at that time. Two crew members, aged 33 and 34 years, were slightly injured and taken to hospital. The strong explosion was felt in different areas of the city. The dense black cloud which was rising into the sky from the port was visible from several kilometers away. The fire was tackled within 10 minutes by three port patrol boats and fire fighters on the pier. In addition, three port tugs cooled the bulkheads and superstructure of the ship with water cannons. No pollution has been observed. Technicians of EcoTaras intervened to prevent any loss of oil, but at the time of the explosion the tanker had little cargo in the tanks.
