Drunk machinist fell into water but was quickly saved

Tue Dec 04 10:23:02 CET 2012 Timsen

On Nov 30, 2012, at 9 p.m. at 21.00 clock the machinist of the "Mitral" fell into the water of the Trave while the tug was berthed in Travemünde at the Ostpreussen Quay. Fortunately witnesses had seen the accident and were able to save him after a short time. The 69-year-old from Hamburg had consumed considerable amounts of alcohol on the Christmas Market at the quay. When he returned to the ship with his mate, they were being watched by a witness. When trying to jump aboard the tug, he missed the bulwark, slipped and fell into the 6.5 ° C cold water between ship and quay. Immediately a rescue rod was brought by three men who had seen the accident and the man could be saved. An ambulance took him to the Sana Hospital with suspected hypothermia. As a statutory gangway had lacked, the water police Travemünde has launched an investigation against the 49-year-old captain from Hamburg.
