Anchor trouble on the Wester Scheldt
The 'MSC Shannon III' became stranded on the Western Scheldt near Waarde on the afternoon of Feb 27, 2026, due to anchor problems. After a few hours, it was able to resume its journey. There were no disruptions to other shipping traffic. The ship was en route from Antwerp to Montreal, when it got anchor problems and it was uncertain whether there was still a connection between the ship and the anchor. Rijkswaterstaat deployed a patrol boat. Because the ship was relatively well-positioned, there was no disruption to other shipping. The outgoing tide also posed no problem, as the 'MSC Shannon III', with its 10.3-meter draft, did not get stuck in the sand. The anchor was on the side of the waterway and was eventually released and was now resting on the bottom of the Western Scheldt, along with part of the chain. It will have to be removed by MSC itself. Around 4:00 p.m., the 'MSC Shannon III' was able to continue its journey with an ETA as of March 7.
