Grounding in Chios
The 'Nissos Samos' with 332 passengers and more than 200 vehicles on board, operating a scheduled route from Piraeus to Psara, Chios and Mytilene, drifted aground in Chios harbour in the morning of May 19, 2022. The ferry failed to moor upon its arrival from Piraeus due to strong winds and had to drop anchor, but at around 5 a.m. LT she drifted aground in the port basin. The tugs 'Michalis S', Nikalaos L' and 'Isidoros S' provided assistance. After it was ascertained that there was no leakage or inflow of water and no mechanical damage, the ship was refloated 4,5 hours later and started the mooring process again on the west side of the port, with the help of the tugs. The mooring attempt caused slight retraction on the quay. Subsequently, in the presence of the Fire Service and EKAB, the safe disembarkation of the passengers destined for Chios took place. Eventually, the ship docked at the northern pier, from where the unloading process began. No injuries were reported from the incident and no marine pollution was observed. The ship had to undergo inspections and renewal of class certificate by the attending classification society prior to be allowed to resume the scheduled voyage.
