Passenger fell into the water when cruise ship broke lose
On the evening of June 30, 2026, strong winds in the port of Kerkyra (Corfu), caused the mooring lines of the 'Norwegian Viva' to snap. The ship shifted away from the dock, pulling the gangway and resulting in a 56-year-old passenger from New Zealand falling into the water. She was quickly rescued and treated for minor injuries. The ship's captain was interrogated by the local Greek authorities, before the vessel continued on its scheduled itinerary.
Unsuccesful search for crew member who fell overboard
A crew member of the 'Norwegian Viva' fell overboard during a Caribbean cruise on April 9,, 2026, as the ship departed its last port of call in Costa Maya, on a seven-night itinerary that began on April 5. Around 7:00 p.m., the ship suddenly turned around to search the surrounding waters after reports that someone may have fallen overboard. The captain then informed the passengers of the situation, and searchlights were illuminating the surrounding waters as the crew conducted a search that lasted approximately two hours. The ship immediately informed the Mexican Maritime MRCC. Other vessels in the vicinity also participated in the search, in accordance with maritime protocols. The Mexican authorities subsequently took over, allowing the ship to resume its voyage. The search yielded no results and has since been suspended. The crew member’s family has been informed of the incident. The ship returned to Galveston, Texas, on April 11 and completed its cruise as planned. It has since repositioned itself in Miami—without passengers—in preparation for a transatlantic crossing departing on April 14, before the summer season in Europe.
