OCEANA SKY 9189938

Fri Nov 05 11:19:20 CET 2010 Timsen

The South African registered catamaran “Pompos” on its way from East London to Port Elizabeth was run down by the “Sanko Spring” on Nov 4, 2010, at 6 a.m. near Port Alfred. The yacht crew of three battled for 90 minutes to recover the mast fearing its wires would wrap around the ship’s propeller and drag them under 27 nautical miles north of Port Alfred. The collision was probably caused by hazy weather, but the accident was still under investigation by the authorities. The skipper of the “Sanko Spring” told the authorities shortly after being contacted that his ship had not hit the catamaran and had been at least 10m away from it, after the “Pompos”had contacted maritime authorities to get assistance and Samsa officials had spotted the “Sanko Spring” passing Port Elizabeth.
