Disabled cargo ship towed to Ireland

Sun Aug 25 00:04:48 CEST 2019 Timsen

The "Onego Rio" was towed a third of the way from Canada to Ireland by two tugs of Atlantic Towing and Salvage. The cargo vessel left Panama City on Aug 4 bound for Rosyth Pwhere it was due to arrive on Aug 18. On Aug 16 the vessel lost all engine power and began to drift 600 miles off the south-west coast. The company initially deployed the "Ocean Challenger" on Aug 16 for this purpose and arrived at the casualty on Aug 19. The two vessels were met at the bay entrance by a second tug, the "Ocean Bank", which will remain on standby until the engine repairs have been completed. The cargo ship dropped anchor off Bere Island in West Cork in the afternoon of Aug 24, 2019, after having been towed 600 miles from the south coast. The "Onego Rio" remained at the anchorage during a full assessment of the damage and the repairs required. The anchoring manoever was monitored by an Irish Coast Guard helicopter. On Sep 2 the ship was being towed to Rotterdam for repairs, and it arrived at the Sea Port in Dordrecht on Sep 6 around 3.30 p.m., assisted by the "Multratug 16". She left the port again on Nov 20 at 4.30 a.m. and finally headed to Rosyth where it arrived on Nov 22 at 8.30 a.m. Report with photo: https://www.irishexaminer.com/breakingnews/ireland/irish-tug-sails-over-a-third-of-the-way-to-canada-to-tow-crippled-cargo-ship-to-safety-946023.html
