Sunken wreck still off Iskenderun

Fire fighting effort continued

On Jan 16 the "Retaj" was moored in Iskenderun in the Alexander's District while the fire continued despite cooling efforts. The firefighting efforts were timewise hampered by the effect of the wind but continued uninterrupted, and meanwhile rain supported the operation. There had been fears the 20 tons fuel oil might explode, while the ship suffered major damage. Cargo ship ablaze at Iskenderun

In the morning of Jan 14, 2015, at 9.55 a.m. a fire erupted on board of the "Retaj" in İskenderun. The ship was moored in Den Bir Port. Dspite all intervention of the fire rescue the blaze could not be contained. Both from sea and shore teams were trying to control the fire. Four fire fighting tugs were on scene. However, the ship loaded with 5700 tons hay was completely ablaze with flames raging meters high and the sound of explosions. The crew of 23 was safely evacuated.
