Freighter grounded off Novorossyisk

Wed Dec 12 18:34:43 CET 2018 Timsen

On Dec 12, 2018, at 1.40 a.m. the "Rio" contacted the Novorossiysk Port Authroties via VHF and requested tugs to avoid an imminent grounding after going adrift from anchorage No. 416. The unloaded ship had on board 150 tons of diesel fuel. Due to the storm assistance tugs were unable to reach the ship. It ran aground at 1.50 a.m. in SW winds of 19–25 m/s and wave heights of 4,5 meters at the southern coast of the Novorossiysk Bay. The ship had sailed from Iskenderun in ballast on Dec 2. The crew of 21 was safe and remained on board, and meanwhile the port tug "Toropliviy" went on standby at the ship which was hard aground in pos. 44° 37.22' N 037° 54.84' E, being pounded by the surf. Short time before, in the same storm, the yacht "Vega" capsized in the Gelendzhik Bay. On board were five people. The boat overturned at 1.30 a.m. about 15 meters from the shore. Three people were washed away from the deck with a wave, but only two reached the beach, two more friends had moved ashore in advance. Rescuers have so far failed to find the fifth sailor.
