Island supplier sank in storm
The "San Cristobal" (IMO: 735059070) sank in the morning of Nov 16, 2014, around 25 miles southwest of the Santa Elena Peninsula in the Guayaquil Gulf. The ship was en route from Guayaquil to the Galapagos Islands. Rough weather and big waves contributed to the sinking. One wave had caused a list of 15 degree, short time later another wave caused the ship to capsize and sink within ten minutes. It foundered on a water depth of 2600 meters. The crew of 13 was rescued by local fishermend and was recovering in a nursing home in Guayaquil. The vessel had 1,100 tons of general merchandise on board such as construction materials, but also vehicles carrying gas cylinders and other materials, vegetables, frozen food, beverages, etc. One of on the whole seven containers on board was recovered. The ship was inspected on Nov 15 in the port of Guayaquil and got all certificates to be seaworthy. One of on the whole seven containers was pulled by fishing boats onto the beach at Chanduy. Around 12:30 p.m. a group of villagers found remains of another container on the beach. Meanwhile a third container was found destroyed on the rocks at Punta del Alto, near Mambra. The search efforts for the lost cargo continued. A surveillance aircraft of the Coast Guard located two more containers and a floating box in the sea. Patrol boats were out to monitor the driftgood.
