Containership in near collision with yacht with dead skipper

Wed Sep 05 09:03:58 CEST 2012 Timsen

On Sep 2, 2012, around 2 p.m. the water police Cuxhaven was notified by the pilot of "San Diego Bridge“ which was running Elbe downstream about a yacht which had crossed the fairway very close to the ship. The pilot had remarked a person lying on deck that did not respond to typhon signals or the wake of the ship. The police boat "Bürgermeister Brauer“ headed for the yacht. Once aboard the "Knurrhahn“ they remarked an elder person on the foredeck with a bleeding head injury. Assisted by two paramedics which reached the yacht aboard the lifeboat "Gillis Gullbrandson" it was attempted to rescuscitate the unresponsive man. A physician who was taken aboard the yacht by the lifeboat "Hermann Helms" pronounced the man dead. The "Knurrhahn" was taken to Cuxhaven by the police and seized for investigations which revealed that the deceased was a 72-year-old man from Otterndorf. There were no indications of foul play. The further investigations were lead by the police in Cuxhaven.
