Salvaged purse seiner could be repaired within some months

Wed Dec 14 10:35:53 CET 2016 Timsen

The "Siempre Urbegi" will most likely be repaired by the Cabanese company Aplicaciones Tecnológicas Acyrnor. The Acyrnor staff continued with the tasks of emptying the tanks and cleaning the interior of the ship in the port of Malpica. The Corme-based purse seiner was put on dry ground at dawn on Dec 11, and the next day the work of emptying the hull from oils and fuels started. The company was also in charge of an evaluation of the repair costs for the shipowners and the insurance company. According to experts, the total cost of repairs will exceed 400,000 Euros and could end up at around 500,000 Euros. All radio equipment and equipment became unusable, and many of the hydraulic components were affected too. In addition, the crack in the bow, the surface of which was approximately one square meter, was located precisely in the wedge area of the bow, which will make repair work difficult. Works will not focus exclusively on the part destroyed by the impact of the rocks, but that workers first will have to remove a much wider area of the hull. Work may take 2,5 to three months it was the second ship lost by the two brothers owning the vessel after the "Novo Urbegi" sank 14 miles off Fisterra in early June after suffering water ingress on the way to the Azores. Its six crew members were rescued safe and sound. Salvage operation completed

Mon Dec 12 10:46:59 CET 2016 Timsen

On Dec 11 at noon, more than twelve hours after the "Siempre Urbegi" was hoisted on the quay at Malpica , the ship continued to pour water from its interior, despite the continuous pumping that was carried out to bring it fully afloat. After spending almost a day at 16 meters depth and another day at the pier, the boat was finally resting in the travel lift at 3 a.m. Several companies and more than 20 people were involved in the salvage in which also the "Anzol" collaborated, which had rescued the crew and took them to the port. It was estimated that at least two months would be necessary to carry out the repairs. The most affected part was the bow area, where the ship against the rocks, but the rest of the hull hardly suffered damage.
