Ferry damaged in collision, passenger injured
On Dec 18, 2014, at 7.40 p.m. the "Sultamahmet", 1065 gt (IMO: 9415519) was in collision with the Belize-flagged bulkcarrier “Tanais Dream" in the Istanbul Strait, injuring one passenger and risking the lives of hundreds of others. The bulkcarrier, was on the way from Novorossiysk to Castellon and passing the Strait without using the service of a qualified pilot, despite the strong recommendations by the International Maritime Organization and by the Turkish Government. Both ships were damaged, the superstructure of the ferry dented. The sea rescue service sent the tug "Kurtarma 6" and the lifeboats "Kıyı Emniyeti 4" and "Kıyı Emniyeti 5" to the accident site. All passengers and cars of the “Sultanahmet” were disembarked. The injured passenger was taken to hospital. The “Tanais Dream” was anchored at Ahırkapı.
