Bodies of missing fishermen recovered

The bodies of a missing couple who were missing after the collision of their boat with the "Tian Yi 5" were recovered on March 20, more than a week after the accident south of Hong Kong on March 12 at 8.45 a.m. 1,8 km outside Hong Kong’s maritime border. The Marine Department was notified by the Guangdong Provincial Maritime Search and Rescue Centre that the sunken fishing boat was located near the site of the accident, outside Hong Kong waters. The dead couple were located off Lamma Island. One of the bodies was spotted near the surface while the other was found inside the cabin of the submerged boat. The couple’s daughter identified the bodies as those of her parents Ho Yuk-ki, 66, and Lo So-mui, 62. None of the 13 crew members on the "Tian Yi 5" were injured, but it was unclear at the time how many people were on the fishing boat while authorities from both sides launched search and rescue efforts. The Hong Kong police, the Fire Services Department and the Government Flying Service were involved, with the SAR operation overseen by the Marine Department’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre. A day later, the couple’s 36-year-old daughter filed a report to police, after her parents had gone missing. They were last seen in their home on Ap Lei Chau Main Street on the night of March 10. They had been in the fishing industry for more than 30 years, and used to catch rabbitfish in the morning around waters near the Dangan Islands, selling their catch in Aberdeen. They left Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter on March 11 and were supposed to return on March 12. The tanker, which was saoöomg from Qingdao to Shenzhen, was not detained after the collision. On March 18, it was moored at Dongjiang near Nizhou in Dongguan, Guangdong province. The Marine Department said on March 20 that it would follow up on the case.

Fishermen missing after collision

The "Tian Yi 5", enroute from Qingdao to Shenzen, was in collision with a fishing boat near the island of Lamma in Hong Kong on March 12, 2019, at 1 a.m. The 13 crew members of the tanker were safe, but the crew of the fishing vessel was missing. The tanker launched a boat, but no one could be found in the water. An SAR operation was launched to find the others in the area 1,8 kilometers from Lamma island. Immediately after being made aware of the collision, the captain of the oil tanker notified the Marine Department, which soon coordinated with the police and the fire department to jointly conduct a search and rescue operation which was hampered by choppy seas. The Government Flying Service also sent three helicopters for the operation. The search by the marine police and the fire department was ongoing in the waters of Hong Kong. On March 12 at noon the tanker moored in pos. 22° 8.03' N 113° 47.35' E on Hongkong anchorage after the collision. It only suffered minor damage.
