Bunker tanker allided with two container ships in Bremerhaven

Fri Apr 17 11:07:38 CEST 2026 Timsen

On the afternoon of April 15, 2026, the bunkter tanker 'RLO Merchant' (IMO: 9305350) allided with two container ships, which were berthed at the Strom Quay in Bremerhaven, the "W. Kampala" (IMO: 9215311) and the "Vilnia Maersk', causing significant material damage. At approximately 4:20 p.m., the bunker tanker attempted to get alongside the 'Vilnia Maersk' for refueling, presumably in strong currents. The maneuver failed, however, and the tanker subsequently damaged both the 'Vilnia Maersk' and the 'W. Kampala', which was berthed behind it. No injuries and no pollution were reported. The water police have recorded the incident and issued a sailing ban on the tanker, which had suffered some hull damage at starboard side. Administrative proceedings have been initiated against the 50-year-old captain of the tanker. The water police investigation was ongoing. The 'W. Kampala' left Bremerhaven the same day enroute to Antwerp with an ETa as of April 17, and the 'Vilnia Maersk' also departed enroute to Klaipeda with an ETA as of April 18.
