Freighter attacked and boarded by pirates off Nigeria

Fri Feb 14 13:15:38 CET 2020 Timsen

The 'Maersk Tema' has been attacked by two pirate boats approx. 170 miles off the coast of Nigeria in the Gulf of Guinea on Feb 14, 2020. The ship was sailing at 19.4 knots immediately before it was attacked. After that the speed was slowed down and the course changed, before the ship went adrift. Two pirates were believed to have boarded the ship, while the crew allegedly entrenched themselves in the citadel. The crew followed the emergency protocol. The Bernhard Schulte's management company BSM has reported the incident to the Guinea Anti-Piracy Reporting Center and cooperated with all relevant maritime authorities in the area. The Nigerian patrol ship SVS 'Teach' (IMO: 9686534) was heading towards the vessel and expected to reach it in a few hours. On Feb 15 the 'Maersk Toma' was heading for Lagos at 13 knots speed. The Nigerian patrol vessel and a Portugal Navy ship were cruising around in the area.
