Cog replica decommissioned due to safety defects

Fri Sep 12 13:24:46 CEST 2025 Timsen

The German Trade Association for Transport has decommissioned the "Wissemara" with immediate effect as of Aug 26, 2025, due to safety defects in the planks. For the operating Poeler Koggen Verein (Poel Cog Association), the cancellation of the remaining trips for 2025 meant significant financial losses. The replica Hanseatic cog is not permitted to set sail until further notice. During an inspection, the German Trade Association for Transport discovered safety defects in the wooden hull. The 'Poeler Koggen Verein', the association which operates the ship, was facing significant financial losses. The association, is primarily financed through membership fees and donations. During a previously planned maintenance stay at the Tamsen shipyard in Rostock in November it is intended to repair the damage. The approximately 450 association members were now faced with the task of closing a financial gap and simultaneously covering the repair costs to make the "Wissemara" seaworthy again. The association hoped that some customers can imagine rescheduling their event onto the berthed ship.

Cog stuck for three hours

Fri Apr 19 20:00:27 CEST 2019 Timsen

On April 19, 2019, the "Wissmara" ran aground off Hohen Wieschendorf with 42 passengers on board. The cog was stuck for three hours before the lifeboat "Hans Hackmack" which had been deplyed at 3 p.m. from the DGzRS station Grömitz refloated it jointly with the "Wolfgang Wiese". The vessel was disabled after a line got caught in the propeller. At 6.45 p.m. it was towed into the port of Wismar and safely berthed. No one was injured, and the lifeboat left port at 8 p.m. German reports with photos: https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/mecklenburg-vorpommern/Kogge-Wissemara-auf-Grund-gelaufen-aber-wieder-flott,wissemara102.html https://www.seenotretter.de/aktuelles/seenotfaelle/ansicht/news/seenotretter-schleppen-festgekommene-kogge-nach-wismar/
