ANL Benalla assisted in rescue of distressed yachtsman

Wed Oct 17 10:27:00 CEST 2012 Timsen

A single hand sailor who left Pittwater two weeks ago to sail to Eden has been rescued and was due to arrive back in Sydney late on Oct 17, 2012, or early next morning. The 44-year-old Queensland yachtsman activated an emergency beacon in the morning of Oct 16 about 320 nautical miles east of Sydney. He was the only person aboard the 11m yacht, which was drifting further out to sea. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) began a search-and-rescue operation for the yachtsman at 8.15 a.m. and enlisted the assistance of two international commercial aircraft - an Air Canada Boeing 777 en route from Vancouver to Sydney and an Air New Zealand A320 en route from Auckland to Sydney. The pilots of both planes were able to confirm the yacht's position and AMSA's Essendon-based Dornier search-and-rescue plane was sent to the scene, where it arrived at noon. The crew aboard the AMSA plane were able to communicate with the sailor, who said his yacht had been dismasted and was low on fuel. The "ANL Benalla" enroute Port Kembla-Nelson arrived alongside the yacht late in the afternoon to provide shelter from strong winds until the water police vessel "Nemesis" arrived from Sydney at midnight last night. The yachtsman was rescued by the crew of the "Nemesis" but was forced to abandon his yacht. The "Nemesis" was returning to Sydney with the yachtsman. Seas were 3 m to 4 m high and conditions were fairly rough.
