Shrimper saved yacht skipper after fire

In the night of Oct 21, 2020, a sailing yacht caught fire off Mandal. Skipper Lennart Danielsen (52), who was about to land a catch of shrimps with the 'Pilot', had previously located the yacht with the chart plotter, but suddenly it disappeared from the map. He contacted the coastal radio station, which reported a fire. Then he saw a light on the horizon. A quarter of an hour later he had reached the position. The yacht was already full ablaze. A lifeboat was also approaching the position parallel to the cutter. The skipper of the yacht in the meantime had escaped onto the life raft and shot an emergency flare. He was taken on board the 'Pilot' unharmed, but shocked. Before the fire, a filter on the machine was clogged and the machine then failed. The man had changed the filter, but when he restarted the engine there was a bang and shortly afterwards the yacht was on fire. Even the life raft container was damaged by the intense heat. The man was handed over to the lifeboat and he received medical attention. There was no resuce for his yacht - it burned out completely and sank.
